STANES GARAGE  UPDATED

Spencer Robson Stanes was born on July 1, 1911, in Perth, to parents Harry Arthur Stanes and Estella Berenice Stanes. He received his education at Guildford Grammar School and was affiliated with the Liberal Party, identifying as a member of the Church of England.
On October 7, 1935, he married Vida Alice Milne, the daughter of William "Allan" Milne and Ivy Evelyn Alice Milne, from Borden in Albany. Together, they had two children: Allan Garnham, born in 1936, and Justin Halstead, born in 1938.
Spencer began his career as a garage proprietor and motor mechanic in August 1928, and by 1934, he was established in Mt. Barker. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1940 and served during World War II.

After his military service, he came from Mount Barker to take over Jackson and Webb's Garage in Gnowangerup around 1950. The garage was situated in Yougenup Road between Frantoms and Stewart & Sons Hardware. Spencer was a qualified mechanic.
The business was agent for Dodge, Austin and Desoto, and also Case Tractors. They carried full stocks of Batteries, Car and Truck Tyres & Tubes, Springs & Accessories. They also sold Triumph & A.J.S. Motor Cycles, H.M.V. & Airzone Radios.
A range of Bicycles for Boys, Girls, Ladies and Men , was in stock.
Spencer and his wife Vida lived in McDonald Street with their two sons, Alan and Justin.

In addition to his business in Gnowangerup, Spencer acquired 2,000 acres of virgin farmland north of Borden. In 1957, he retired to Mandurah, where he successfully built up several businesses, which he sold in 1960. Afterward, he moved to Pingelly, where he sold his farm before finally relocating to Perth in 1970. In Perth, Spencer took on the role of Tractor Sales Manager for Leyland Motor Company.
